LEGENDARY SONGWRITERS IN CONCERT
Mike McClellan returns to The Spotted Mallard for
a special songwriters-in-concert show with the legendary
Kerryn Tolhurst and Steve Hoy. Mike McClellan
is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential
Australian singer-songwriter guitarists of his generation.
This year marks the 40th year since Song And Danceman
was a national hit and voted Song Of The Year. He will
be featuring a new album of songs Dancing In The Rain,
his second in three years.
From the mid sixties in the Melbourne blues scene to Greg
Quill and Country Radio and The Dingoes and beyond, Kerryn
Tolhurst has been an influential force in Australian
music as a musician, songwriter and producer. Mention
his name in the company of fellow musicians and you'll
get instant recognition. Drop the name Steve Hoy
and the reaction will be the same - great writers and
players. Both have had long and illustrious careers in
the Australia music industry.
Let's pack The Spotted Mallard for a magical night.
It's quite possible that these three wonderful performers
will end the night on stage together. And that's a treat
you won't want to miss!
MIKE McCLELLAN
Mike McClellan is widely acknowledged as one
of the most influential Australian singer-songwriter
guitarists of his generation.
He will be featuring a new album of songs Dancing In
The Rain, his second in three years.
His return to performing has been greeted with enormous
enthusiasm, reconfirming that time has only enhanced
his reputation as one Australia's finest singer-songwriters.
This year marks the 40th year since Song And Danceman
was a national hit and voted Song Of The Year, and his
songs have earned him an honoured place in the history
of Australian music. And you'll still hear Song And
Danceman, The One I Love and Rock'n Roll Lady on radio.
Between 1972 and 1980 Mike released 6 albums of which
2 went gold and many of his songs were covered both
here and overseas. He compered his own ABC TV series
and toured extensively both in Australia and overseas.
By the time he released his Heartland album in 1989
he had quit touring to pursue a successful career in
advertising.
Paul Speelman of the Age wrote when reviewing one of
Mike's concerts, "McClellan is a national asset."
MIKE
McCLELLAN: DANCING IN THE RAIN
Reviewed in Rhythms Magazine, Sept-Oct 2014 by Trevor
J. Leeden
It's precisely 40 years since Mike McClellan
struck gold with the lilting 'Song and Danceman',
the gently countrified tune cementing itself in the
list of all-time Australian classic songs. It's fitting
then that the veteran troubadour should choose to close
his latest album with a new interpretation of his most
famous song, its dusty reflective narrative providing
the blueprint for a musical life well lived. Four decades
have done nothing to erode McClellan's music strengths,
and on the evidence here, he remains one of our finest
acoustic singer-songwriters. There are songs that deal
with coping with heartache ('Dance In The Rain'),
of the difficulties of making a relationship work ('Back
Road To The Blues') and a meditation on ageing ('One
More Round'). The finest moments, both musically
and lyrically, are reserved for introspections on his
own marriage failure (the heavy atmospherics of 'You
Were The One' and the lingering optimism of 'Hoping
I Can Fly'), and the exquisite ballad for his youngest
daughter ('Love Will Come For You'). Much of
the charm of Dancing In The Rain dervies from
McClellan's innate ability to sing with an unaffected
accent, devoid of a nasal twang and overtly jingoistic
Strine posturing. So too, Matt Fell's sympathetic production
focuses on the natural warmth in McClellan's voice,
drawing emotive power from its vulnerability.
The acoustic singer-songwriter is an endangered species
in Australia, swimming against the endless waves of
electronic pop culture. Mike McClellan's not drowning,
instead he's definitely waving a banner that says there
is still a place for intelligent, articulate and poetic
acoustic music. Mike McClellan is as relevant now as
he was 40 years ago, and Dancing In The Rain
deserves your attention.

KERRYN TOLHURST
From the mid sixties in the Melbourne blues scene to
Greg Quill and Country Radio and The Dingoes and beyond,
Kerryn Tolhurst has been an influential force
in Australian music as a musician, songwriter and producer.
He spent 30 years in the US working in all capacities
and has recently returned to Australia. Kerryn has had
several hits with his songs including 'Gypsy Queen'
( Greg Quill and Country Radio ), 'Way Out West' ( The
Dingoes/James Reyne, James Blundell), 'Man On Your Mind'
( Little River Band ) and 'All Fired Up' ( Rattling
Sabres, Pat Benetar ).
While in the US he performed at The Apollo in Harlem,
Carnegie Hall, NYC and the Ryman Hall in Nashville and
numerous international guitar festivals. He has produced
around 45 albums in the last 20 years in the US and
Australia.
He has just completed production of a tribute album
to his old friend, the late Greg Quill featuring the
cream of Australia's singer-songwriters performing Greg's
songs, including Mike McClellan.
In 2009 Kerryn was inducted to the ARIA Hall of Fame,
along with the rest of The Dingoes.

STEVE HOY
Steve Hoy first came to national attention with
the Joe Camilleri produced album Anticipation, released
on Camilleri's Spirit label. Since then he has released
several collections of his songs including Life Next
Door on A&M records. He has toured with Melissa
Etheridge, Warren Zevon, Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris
and Sheryl Crow among others, and collaborated with
many writers and performers including Ross Wilson, Joe
Camilleri, and Nathan Cavaleri.
That Steve Hoy should team up with Kerryn is no surprise.
Steve's vibrant, hook laden songs, energetic vocals
and deft guitar work are perfectly complemented by the
subtle magic of Kerryn's guitar. Solo or out front of
a band Steve Hoy delivers - every time.
"I've regarded Steve as one of the true songwriters
in this country." Don Walker
