ABOUT SECOND LINE MUSIC

Here's what I wrote back in 2014 when I started Second Line Music .......

In 2013 I had the privilege to sit in the chair as the Director of the 25th Brunswick Music Festival, standing in for my good friend John McAuslan. In many ways this brought to an end a journey that begun for me way back in 1980 when I was the Co-Ordinator of The Boite in Melbourne (1980-85), continued from 1985-1996 when I was the Community Arts Officer at The City of Brunswick, and then was completed from 1996-2013 working with John in a range of different capacities at The Brunswick Music Festival.

But the story was not not finished.
Late 2013, Dan Bourke asked me if I would be willing to work with the mighty Purple Dentists and get them playing together again in a regular gig .... of course I said yes! The answer was the same when Frank Jones asked me if I could do some work with the Whirling Furphies. My good friend Andy Irvine asked me if I would promote a Melbourne gig for him, and of course, the opportunity to throw into the mix some shows with my daughter Madeline was way too good to miss!

The Spotted Mallard in Sydney Rd, Brunswick has proven to be a dream venue to promote this surge of music making. A great room, great food, craft beer and a generous and hard-working staff all make for a wonderful night of music-making. As I always say to our audiences at every show "If you keep coming along we can keep the music happening - it is a very simple equation!"

So I took the decision to get a little more organised and established Second Line Music to promote contemporary, acoustic, folk, roots and world music in Brunswick (where else!) ...... and now after more than 40 shows it is the place to be!

Why Second Line Music?
Second line is a tradition in brass band parades in New Orleans, Louisiana. The "main line" or "first line" is the main section of the parade, or the members of the actual club with the parading permit as well as the brass band .... but this is the bit that I like:

So for me Second Line Music is all about those of us who follow the music simply for the enjoyment.
